There is a pretty good story behind this illustration. It was June of 2007 and I was really wanting to get into editorial illustration. Just as I was getting my portfolio together to try to hawk it to some magazines around town, the art director for Tribeza called me. I had met him some years before, but my work must have made enough of an impression that he decided to call me up two years later to see if I would be interested in a monthly illustration gig. My first assignment was an illustration to accompany an article written about the pit falls of pagents. In particular, Miss Teen Texas. It just so happened, that at the time my cousin, Sommer, was the reigning Miss Teen Texas. I was able to use an image of her in one of the dresses she wore, which happened to work perfect with the concept of the piece. The staff at Tribeza loved it because it had such a personal touch. It was the perfect piece to start my tenure at Tribeza.

This is the first of hand-drawn type illustrations that will eventually become limited edition prints and t-shirts. I sketched out the type then converted it over in Illustrator.

The Cycle Camp USA project gives me a good opportunity to give you a little glimpse behind the curtain and see the evolution of logos as I cycle through revisions and different ideas. Of course most of the time, only the final product is shown so countless ideas generated during any given project are either shelved are lost in the design black hole. Currently, an iPad coaching app for Cycle Camp USA is being developed.
